The peony is almost out of season.
I love this flower. It has layers of petals and to watch them slowly unfold brings contentment. My life is so simple that I’m entertained by watching peonies open before my eyes. ๐
A nearby store carries them, but supply is getting low, so I bought what they had.
When I woke up the next day and walked by the coffee table, I stopped and stared.
They had burst open during the night.
The store offers a 5 day guarantee on flowers. If they don’t open properly you can return them.
I found the receipt, placed them in a bag and took them back to the store. The florist remembered me from the day before.
She didn’t have any fresh peonies, but suggested I take a look around. Nothing screamed, ‘take me home’, so I went to a cashier for the return.
That was a first. Returning dead flowers.
That’s another level of a beautiful life. Knowing what doesn’t belong and to lovingly send it back.
Such beauty though. What a lovely present to wake up too. Freshly bloomed flowers ๐

Loved your last line! I also loved how receptive the florist was. ๐

My mother and grandmother had peonies in their gardens at home. Big lovely ever-blooming pinks, whites, and a mix of both. My mother would pick three flowers in full bloom, and ‘float’ them in a wide crystal bowl of water. Pure Magic! I always was fascinated by the ants that climbed all over them. Do scientists know to this day WHY they do that? They are an integral part of the peony blooming or so we thought years ago. No ants, no blooms. Here in the desert SW peonies are desired, but hard to come by. I miss them, and those ants! And, yes to sending back things that either don’t measure up, or are no longer needed.

Wow. I had forgotten about the ants since these came from a florist. That sounds like pure magic and a cherished memory!
Having them in the house this year made an impact on my daughter. A couple of weeks ago, she had peonies tattooed on her arm. Now she will always have them. ๐

I don’t know much about flowers. I probably would have thought that’s how they’re supposed to look
