Embracing the New

I got a new phone. This may not seem earthshattering to you, but for me it’s a bold move. The phone I had was perfectly alright, and it’s served me well for years. My favorite part of that phone was the camera because it took pretty pictures, or so I thought.

The day I bought this new phone I wasn’t looking for a phone. I was online paying my internet bill, and saw an advertisement that might be helpful in my workplace. I called to ask a few questions about their phone service and the customer service rep told me about it. Before I realized it, she was asking about my phone, and offering up better options. Honestly, she had my attention with two words. Samsung Galaxy. Her name is Tamika, and she said, “Ms. Holmes. I’m not leaving until we find you a phone you’ll love.” She was true to her word, and spent 45 minutes going over every Galaxy option. She wanted to know what’s most important to me in a phone, and I told her, “The camera to capture moments.”

Two days later, the phone arrived.

It looked huge compared to the phone I was using, but it also looked thin and sleek. It didn’t seem to have many apps, but I didn’t know at first to swipe the screen up instead of to the left. It has five cameras instead on one, but I just wanted to point and shoot, so at first I thought maybe I made a mistake getting something so new and technologically savvy. I guess they are called a ‘smart phone’ for a reason, but I didn’t want it to be smarter than me. That’s when I pulled up YouTube and watched a few tutorials on how to use the phone before making a decision.

As the years flow by, it’s best to stay in that flow. Of course we long for the simple life of our youth, but when technology is involved, it’s not all that simple, but there’s good news! We can learn. To keep an open mind and heart in this day and age, and never stop learning. Don’t be afraid of new my darling. Find a YouTuber to show you how to use it.

It was a cloudy day, so there was no sunlight, but look at the difference! You can count every stitch of the bedspread in the second photo. Utilizing the limited amount of natural light, I found it interesting that it picked up every shadow. The old phone sorta whitewashed everything. Which photo speaks to you?

Embracing the new involves letting go of something old. I know people who miss the flip phone, but those phone were made for phone calls, which was how we stay connected back in the day. Technology is here to make life easier, but it looks hard to use. It’s really not when we’re willing to learn. My daughter says it looks like an iPhone, how dare she. 🙂

Thanks to Tamika educating me, it’s a keeper because I do love my new phone.

  1. Beautiful photo with the new found! Quite amazing! Loved your post as well. It’s so hard to break old habits. We defend them to our detriment at times. It takes energy and commitment to do what you did… And a daughter to help you doesn’t hurt, nor do YouTube videos. Congratulations!

    1. Thank you Jan! I’m excited to see what all these cameras will do! Letting go of something we become attached to is difficult, but when we do it opens the door to what’s next, which is usually better. ❤

    1. Thanks LA. Yeah…I work with technology everyday with my jobs, so I shy away from it for personal use. When the day is done, I go for a walk or sometimes just stand in my yard to get away from it. This new phone feels like my personal assistant, which is what I do for a living so it’s rather nice having an assistant! 🙂

  3. i have a galaxy active 7..its quite a few years old but i loathe to part with it because it has been such a good one. I have tried to find the same one online but guess this style is no longer made. you will love it even more as u go i am sure:)

    1. Have you looked on eBay lovely? I know how you feel. It was hard giving up my other phone, but the new one is more fun. I’m sure you will find the right phone for you when it’s time. Thank you for sharing! ❤

      1. actually i just did that yesterday again..they arent cheap even used.Plus many are listed at a better cost only if i switch carriers which i wont do because it took me years of paying outrageous monthly bills to finally find a decent monthly rate with a trustworthy one. I want one that is new and not refurbished as well…

      2. If you have found a carrier you love, I would call them. They may have one laying on a back shelf somewhere, or know how to get one. If they don’t make the phone anymore, it has probably been replaced with a similar one but upgraded version. You never know where the path may lead. ❤

  4. I have a Samsung phone. I think its a galaxy one, but not sure which model. I bought second hand and had it in ready in case my current one went on me, after it went in the bucket of water that time last year. But its still going. The battery is draining quicker though now, with all the use of it since last year, regarding mum’s affairs on top of what I use it for. So one day it will come in handy.

    I noticed the magazine in the photo. I have read that magazine a couple of times.

    1. Hi Liz!!! The woman who helped me was very thoughtful. She didn’t try to sell me on the new Galaxy, she recommended this one because of the cameras, and it was very affordable.

      I understand about your battery and you could always have it replaced. I learned how much of a difference a new battery makes when a tired one is replaced.

      3. I have a phone in ready, because I was expecting my current one to pack up, after it went in a bucket of water last year.
        I am trying to get every last bit out this phone, before I do, regardless the other a better model.
        Its been sometime since I had a phone where I could replace the battery.

        It doesn’t surprise me you have read the Calm magazine too. 🙂

  5. Congrats on your new phone! YES! Embracing technology! And know what’s really exciting, Barb? Once you’ve gotten the basics down, you’ll start finding so many cool things you can do that you don’t even know are there yet. I went through the same thing with my new iPhone (yup, I’m with your daughter, but also Mac-based), and I’m still discovering new stuff all the time one year later. Have fun – you will love this!!

    1. Thank you Jeanne! Hah! My daughter is an Apple. I’ve used her MacBook a few times, and she smiles at me because it’s different. I told her, “It’s not different, everything is just backwards than what I’m used to.” This phone will get the job done, and make it a lot more fun. 🙂
