The Fire Pit

To step outside and smell a fireplace going or a wood pile being burned. It’s a cozy smell this time of year.

In the post, Be at Home it was mentioned our house doesn’t have a fireplace, so I bought an electric one. That’s a wonderful option for inside, but it doesn’t have that real fire smell.

It was time to fix that.

I had visions of sitting around a fire pit with my daughter. Her boyfriend lives in England, but he’s coming here for Christmas. I could see them sitting there in quiet moments of togetherness. Maybe a neighbor would be taking a walk and stop to get warm. The possibilities are endless.

I walked outside and took the lid off the pit.

My daughter came out and helped build the fire. We grabbed our cups of tea and part of my vision came to fruition. We sat by the fire and solved all the worlds problems. We discussed Christmas presents for her boyfriend and for one another. Some of the time we talked and some we just sat.

It’s important to be able to just sit in each other’s company. To enjoy the moment for what it is.

A neighbor walked over to say ‘hello’ and gave an inquisitive glance at the blazing fire. Maybe it’s odd to build one midday. When it was time for my daughter to get ready for her evening plans, she paused and said, “Today was so nice.”

It was a moment.

I’m covered in ash and smell like smoke.

Stepping outside to make sure the fire was out in the pit, I smelled that familiar smell. This time my darling, I knew where it originated. The fire was out but the memories were still aflame. They began today around the fire pit.

Your Daily Reminder

Over the weekend, I bought a new phone.

The calendar on this one is a little more intense than my previous phone. It gives an enormous amount of options for the reminders.

Yes lovely. I set reminders about everything.

♥ ♥ ♥

I spoke with a friend yesterday, and as soon as we hung up from talking, I set a reminder about meeting her for coffee. It was only two days away, but I knew to set a reminder about it.

It’s not that my life is so busy I’d forget.

No love. I get so caught up in the present moment, it’s best to remind myself of future events.

After speaking with my friend, I went to check out a place for pedicures. My daughter and I have been wanting to sit and have one, but I wasn’t sure where. There are so many options where we live, but I’d heard good things about this place.

After making the appointment, I set a reminder. It was for the next day, which is today, but I set one.

In writing this I realize there are moments of goodness on my calendar. Moments I don’t want to miss. What are you reminding yourself of today?

I saw this posted by SC Lourie this morning.

Here my darling. Allow me to remind you…

Collect Beautiful Moments

This morning I changed my sheets.

As I unfolded them to put them on the bed, they smelled like perfume. It took me back to the moment I first purchased perfume wash.

I haven’t used those sheets since last summer, so I was delightfully surprised they still had that smell.

I haven’t bought Tyler wash in a while.

We started out by using it for sheets and towels only, but then we began using it for all of our clothing as well. It became expensive to use for every wash because the small bottle emptied quickly.

It was no longer special, or a moment.

I vowed to go to that little hardware store this week, and buy some perfumed wash. Our sheets will smell like mine do today. This time it will remain only for sheets because overuse steals the moment.

Tell me how you collect beautiful moments?

Chasing the Sunset

I’ve started my morning over twice so far.

The taste of my coffee wasn’t pleasing, so I made a Chemex. I hadn’t made one in so long, it didn’t drain completely, but this is how I felt regardless.

Did it not drain, or did I not give it time?

This morning I recalled teaching my daughter to drive. It was a scary experience. Not teaching her to drive, but that she was learning with my truck!

When it was time for her to learn, it was time for us to move. We were living in the country on 40 acres, and the road to our house was treacherous to say the least. It had sharp curves and made of dirt.

The next house we found had straight highway running to it. The first time she went 65 mph she exclaimed, “This is exhilarating!”

I sat in the passenger seat, drinking in the excitement on her face. You want that look to last, but soon after she learned to drive she began adulting. Then you hope they remember the moments which caused that look.

One time we were driving home, and she turned off the main road. It was late in the day and the Texas sky was pink and gold. Her favorite time of day. I didn’t know where she was taking us, as she turned down one road, and then the next.

She parked the truck and stared straight ahead. She had run out of road trying to get close to the sunset.

She said, “I was chasing the sunset.”

We sat in silence watching the sun go down.

Chasing that sunset was exhilarating for her, even though it was out of reach. I was happy she tried without worrying what the end result may be.

I hope you never stop chasing the sunset.

Knowing and Believing

“You have the power to guide your life in the direction you want.” You have heard this before, but do you believe it?

Knowing and believing are different things, but they work together. They can work for, or against each other.

Do you know what you believe? This is not what you think. That is another topic. What you know to be true because you have seen it with your own eyes. Not what you’ve heard.

All I wanted was a beautiful life. That was all.

I didn’t make this life happen. I didn’t run out and get two jobs to provide for my daughter and me. My daughter needed me home, and I wanted to enjoy this life with her, so I kept a part time job working from home. We have not had a need that hasn’t been met, otherwise we didn’t need it.

What you know is what you’ve believed up to this moment.
